Running through Palm Sunday, April 14, is a 6-week class taught by Pastor Emeritus Rick Wolling entitled, “Lenten Lessons from a Puritan.” The class will examine and unpack the classic work of Puritan John Owen’s The Mortification of Sin. Owen was, perhaps, the greatest theologian of the Puritan movement in the 17th century. The Mortification of Sin is, essentially, a commentary on Romans 8:13, in which Paul urges Christians to battle against the sinful tendencies that remain in them, despite their having been brought to faith and new life in Christ. Among Owen’s many works, he wrote on this subject because there was such misunderstanding and poor practice among his Puritan brethren of this key element of Christian growth. Please join us for a class that is sure to be a lively, informative and thorough examination inspired by both the relevant biblical texts and the writing of John Owen, brought to us by our dear friend Rick.
