Brief History

"Our programs focus on the needs of youth and families today. At-risk families, a rapidly growing segment of our population, have special needs. They require special programs that build confidence, help them to develop positive relationships , and instill values that will help them make good decisions. We are helping one family at a time, keeping children and families from coming unraveled by bringing them the love and grace of Jesus Christ."

Family Guidance, Inc. is a community-based Christian organization that has been committed to helping children and families since 1964 and has been led by Robert L. Jamison for the past 13 years.

Their programs include One-to-One, Pittsburgh’s oldest youth mentoring program and one of the nation’s best faith-based mentoring initiatives; LAMP (Learning and Mentoring Program), a partnership with the Safe and Gang Free Schools project of the Pittsburgh Public Schools and churches in the East End, which provides mentors for at-risk teenagers; Marriage Works, a partnership with the Center for Urban Biblical Ministry and the National Fatherhood Initiative that aims to strengthen families in communities where there is a high incidence of child abuse and neglect; TWOgether Pittsburgh, a program providing marriage enrichment, including parenting and fatherhood skills, pre-marriage preparation, divorce prevention, couple-to-couple mentoring, education on marriage and family in high schools, and a public awareness campaign regarding the benefits of a healthy marriage; Promise Camp, breakthrough experiences each summer designed for youth involved in Family Guidance’s year-round programs; Y.E.S. Program, helping urban churches to develop outreach after-school programs to at-risk elementary-aged youth.
