Brief Biography

Did you see the movie The End of the Spear? Did you read the book, Through Gates of Splendor, by Elizabeth Elliot? Did you ever wonder what those young men were like?

Today Steve Dunbar flies a Cessna 206 single-engine plane into the jungle in Ecuador, where there are still no roads for transporting missionaries, teachers, or supplies. Steve also makes medical evacuations possible by air. He lives in the town of Shell, where his two children attend the Nate Saint Memorial School for Missionary Children, which was named in memory of the MAF pilot who was killed by the Auca Indians along with Jim Elliot in 1956.

Mission Aviation Fellowship exists to multiply the effectiveness of the Church using aviation and other strategic technologies that overcome barriers in reaching the world for Christ. They are involved in Evangelism and church support by providing transport to missionaries and local pastors in the interior. They assist with crisis relief work, community development (with staff and supplies for health and local improvement projects), communications (with shortwave and satellite networks to isolated areas), and training and education.

Steve and Kristen met at Mt. Lebanon High School while Kristen was attending Beverly Heights Church and enjoying youth group. Steve was a camper at Ligonier Camp and Conference Center and later served on the staff. After graduation, Kristen attended Westminster College, where she received a B.A. in elementary education, and Steve graduated from Wheaton College and Moody Aviation, a branch of Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.

The Dunbars are now career staff missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship and currently serve in Ecuador. Steve works with MAF to reach people in the interior of the jungles of Ecuador. In addition to being a wife and mother, Kristen enjoys teaching aerobics to a group of Ecuadorian women through Body and Soul Ministries. Their son, Jacob, was born in 1999, and their daughter, Ellen, in 2001.
