Brief Biography
Mario and Jetty De La Vega are missionaries with the Latin America Mission and have served in Ecuador for 20 years through Minamundo (Ministry to the World of Youth). They met as seminary students in San Josè, Costa Rica, Jetty's home country. "We began working exclusively with youth, but with the crises facing Ecuador in recent years, the Lord led us to move more into counseling."
The De La Vega’s direct several counseling centers in Quito, Ambato, and Ibarra, Ecuador. "Our counseling centers are biblically based. We rely on healing by the power of God through prayer." They have witnessed an increase in anxiety during the past few years as economic problems have led to unemployment, depression, and family break-up. In one month alone, 870 people visited the centers, and they received between 1,500 and 1,800 calls requesting prayer by phone and in person. "We had 650 prayers that were reported to have been answered – for health, for work, or other requests."
They have not abandoned their call to serve children and lead them to Christ. In connection with their counseling centers and youth work, Mario and Jetty are busy planting churches. Currently they are working with a year-old 100-member church in Quito that draws many people from their centers. "We call the church ‘Restoration Church’ because many people have spiritual needs and need to be restored. It’s not important where they come from – we help to restore them."
